Our Sale Price:
To maintain an objective trade policy at Southland Books, we base our
book trade and sale values based on a percentage of the original
Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price (MSRP). For example, the majority
of the paperback books in our store are either 1/3 or 1/2 of the
original MSRP. The difference between a book sold at 1/3 and 1/2 can be
based on any of the following possibilities: the books genre (e.g.,
Mystery, Romance, Classic, Non-Fiction, et cetera); the books condition;
our stock of a particular book or author; our expected likelihood of
being able to sell any particular item; and the discrepancy of the
employee.
Your Trade Value:
The trade value of a book (how much you get in trade) is based on 1/2 of
our selling price. This trade value can be used while you are in the
store, or we may issue a trade slip that can be used at any time. Once
you get trade credit, there are only two catches: 1) if you lose it,
it's gone--we don't keep track of trade records; and 2) it cannot be
applied to new or consignment books, compact discs (CDs), or digital
video discs (DVDs)--see clerk for details.
Cash for Your Books:
Cash value for books is based on 1/4 or 1/5 of your trade value. We do
not give cash all the time, or for all books, so call or come by for
details. We are also much more picky with cash value. For example, we do
not give cash for paperback fiction, but we might for nicer Civil War
Non-Fiction.
The Fine Print:
The Trade in policy at Southland Books is based on as objective a scale
as possible. However, there are times when subjective judgments
regarding whether or not we will accept a book must be made. Such
examples include, but are not limited to, books that we have remaindered
from our store (e.g., $1 books with clipped corners); books that are
exceedingly dirty, dusty, smoky, or hair-covered; books that we are
currently overstocked on, or are regularly overstocked on; books with
water damage, silverfish, or other infestations or blemished; and any
book we deem that we do not need for any reason.
